Background
RAW: First Nations Filmmakers is a competitive national call out open to Indigenous filmmakers aged 18-35 to join in a new creative lab initiative which specifically develops short-form episodic creative skills of scriptwriting, directing and producing.
RAW: First Nations Filmmakers is divided into a First Round and Second Round.
The First Round invites new and early-career creator/writers to be part of an ‘Intensive Brainstorming Week’ and to pitch their original concepts to RAW’s team for a chance to go through to the Writers Room workshop week.
The First Round also invites writers to pitch themselves as writer-only applicants to join the Writers Room Workshop Week. The Writers Room workshop week is driven by leading industry figures.
The Second Round invites early-career directors and producers. This Round is focused on the making of the pilot episode which is developed and written during the Writers’ Room workshop week.
RAW: First Nations Filmmakers provides up to three early-career creator/writers the chance to develop their concept into a short-form digital-first series. From the three finalists, one concept will be selected to go through to the Writers Room Workshop Week and Pilot-Making Phase. At the end of the RAW Program the successful applicants concept will have been developed and produced into a single pilot episode which Artology will then pitch to ABC Indigenous for commissioning.
RAW: First Nations Filmmakers’ Executive Producers are celebrated industry professionals, Leah Purcell and Wayne Blair.
RAW: First Nations Filmmakers’ producer and production company is Artology Ltd.
RAW: First Nations Filmmakers is run in partnership with the Indigenous Unit at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS).
RAW: First Nations Filmmakers is supported by ABC Indigenous.
You’re encouraged to apply even if you have no broadcast accreditation.
If you have credits, you can also apply.

On completion of the Writer’s Room Workshop Week, participants must submit a completed series bible and plotted 3 x 10-minute episodes of the successfully selected concept.
On completion of the Writer’s Room Workshop Week, the creator/writer of the successful series continues writing their pilot episode gearing up to its production.
All material must be original and belong to the submitting applicant.
Eligible applicants to RAW are new and early-career creator/writers, writers, directors and producers from all mediums. However, we only accept concepts that fall within the live action episodic narratives. Animation and non-fiction concepts will not be considered.
